Not going to lie, the new iPhone SE looks pretty solid. Considering the fact it’ll be $670 CAD for a 128 gig model sounds radical, when it seems like most phones are pushing a thousand bucks these days. How did I get to the point where I’m considering a new iPhone as a smart financial decision?

Thats my next one. Fruit based phones. I just want it to work.

What android phones are you comparing this iphone se against? Also, just a word of caution, I went from android exclusive to iphone exclusive a few years back because work wanted to give me an iphone but I didn’t want 2 phones. It wasn’t fun, I was too ingrained in the android ecosystem that switching to iOS wasn’t easy. I don’t have Macs so that didn’t make it any better but YMMV . Good luck!

And another one down, another one down, another one bites the dust...
I’ve been a non-stop Apple user for the last 15 years, and used them for several years when I was younger. There are plenty of pain points, but overall the ecosystem integration and focus on quality hardware really pays off.

I suppose there’s a case to be made... but it feels like surrendering to the Borg Queen. Plus there’s no consumer product I’ve owned in the last 20 years that I hated day-in-day-out as much as that iPhone 5c I carried as a spare for awhile.
But mainly, I refuse to surrender to her bitchy walled garden again.

Only semi-considered the Pixel 4 (nothing about it really interests me), the Samsung S20 (wow that’s expensive), and Oneplus 7/8. I’m just interested in a midrange phone with good specs, and this seems to scratch that itch.
I went from iOS 3 to Symbian to Andriod, I’ve used OS X, all types of W indows, surveillance footage software of a million kinds. I’m not super worried about trying to learn a new OS.

This has some nice specs for the price.
My wife is still using the previous version of the SE. I really hope she upgrades to this. She really doesn’t want to give up the small size, but the old one won’t last forever and small phones aren’t coming back.
![]() 04/16/2020 at 15:22 |

I don’t do anything with my phone that I’m concerned about a “walled garden”. And at this point, everyone is evil (Google gave up their old motto), it just depends who you’re fine with giving your money to.
Also, Android fanatics/Apple haters are worse than Apple fanboys in my experience. I don’t understand it.

I’m likely not buying for another few months, and I haven’t had it on my radar, but maybe. Unfortunately, rumourmill and previous Google disappointment don’t set it as a top contender for now.

I have a personal S10e and a work phone iPhone 8. I haaaate the Apple device, some of the decisions on the UI front are just annoying to me.

I certainly see the appeal. I think I still got a few more years in my Pixel 3, but the ubiquity of iPhones is becoming a hard feature to overlook. I feel like once a week my coworkers roll their eyes when I text them and it’s not an iMessage.
That being said I love being a difficult hipster, so I think I'll stick with Android for the foreseeable future.

S10e is basically my perfect phone. I got it for $450, 128 internal, external SD up to 512 I think, still has headphone jack. Basically a flagship minus some shit I don't need at all.

I briefly went to a Pixel in 2018 after a couple years on iPhones. After 3 months it was literally falling apart. I got an iPhone XR at the beginning of 2019 and it hasn’t given me a moment’s trouble.
![]() 04/16/2020 at 15:41 |

Mainly, it’s my photos. On any given day I’m sure I can go to log into Google (and, I do this regularly) and download FULL RESOLUTION originals of every pic I’ve ever taken to my own photo archive. Seeing the ass pain my GF had to go through on her iPhone 8 to get around Apple ? Nah, I’m not interested.
OTOH, I’m clearly a freak because I divorced Windows years ago and run Linux on all my machines so I just like being able to do stuff outside the lines.
OTOOH, the “it just works” thing with Apple is damn appealing a lot of days, so I can’t argue my POV too strenuously.
OTOOOH, I think Apple’s stuff is kinda over-priced relative to any better they might be. I’m buying two year old releases of Android phones and am quite happy paying $250, not $750-1000.
![]() 04/16/2020 at 15:41 |

Yeah, it was the first Apple product I’d bought since the MacBook Pro from years ago that I really like but felt it was at least 300% over-priced. So, I bought “the poor person’s iPhone” and paid the price.
so, no argument from me. But I refuse to pay $1000 for a phone. never.

I’m not an Apple person, but I was looking at this as my GF needs an upgrade (I think she has a 6? Maybe a 5.....?? ). Anyway, it l ooks pretty good for the price.
Personally I’m not sure I can buy another phone that doesn’t have the fingerprint sensor on the back where my index finger sits. For now I’m still locked into my Pixel 2, but I may start looking at some refub Pixel 3's.

Just out of curiosity, and I’m not trying to be a smart-ass, but as a photographer, have you looked at the NOKIA 7.2? Zeiss optics... and the collective claims that if you run (not Google’ s!) an after market camera app RAW that the results are stunning.
It’s solidly mid-range, is Android One with solid release support, is affordable and gets rave reviews. I’ve been tempted to replace my older Galaxy Dual-Sim with one.
And, yeah (holds head in shame) I did own that Nokia with the mega large image sensor... Lumia 1020? Oh, man, were the photos and videos great, even if every other thing about the phone sucked. But the photos were amazing.

It’s like Tesla. Is Apple shitty? oh yes, but what they get right, they get very very right.

I just heard about this phone yesterday (I gave up following the rumor sites years ago) and decided that this will probably be my next phone. My trusty old 6S Plus is doing just fine, especially with the new battery I put in last year, but it won’t be long until iOS upgrades are no longer available or just painful to use. I’m pleasantly surprised that my old phone has lasted this long, but I wouldn’t mind something a little speedier.
![]() 04/16/2020 at 16:17 |

I’ve looked at it before, but I’m 50/50 on it for some reason I really can’t justify. I’ve heard the camera is solid, but... I dunno, I’m just not super interested in it. Price is $100 less than the SE, which makes it a solid contender.

My OnePlus 6 was by far my favorite phone ever. Lightning fast, great battery, great form factor, etc. I was quite bummed when Verizon was the only carrier with service at my new apartment. I would have bought a 7 Pro but I didn’t have the spare budget to be able to outright buy a phone.
![]() 04/16/2020 at 16:22 |

I don’t know if I’d jump to a new OS for it, and am happy with my clean android experience (Pixel 3a). But I’m happy this phone exists now - my wife is all aboard the Apple train and will never consider anything else (trust me, I’ve tried). So I’m glad this exists with a decent processor, good enough camera, and the other basics she would need without sacrificing a year’s worth of grocery money next time she needs a new phone .

I feel we’re often pushing for too much in a lot of mainstream tech and cars. I’d like something nicely built with decent specs. Meanwhile, everyone is going “do you want to run VR? Do you want to game? Tap to pay, 120 hz display?” No, I just want good photos, internet, and something that’ll last me a while. I don’t give a damn about the rest.

Apple trolled the Android OEMs hard. Those idiots spent all this time chasing the price increases and doing all the stupid, unnecessary changes (removing headphone jacks, adding notches for no good reason when Android doesn’t need it), they give them a huge punch in the kisser in the mid-range. Now even less people will buy those overpriced f lagships.
I still wouldn’t get one though... I need my physical keyboard.

I’ve been on the OnePlus ship for a while now. I’d say they started offering a strong phone with less garbage “features” for well under $1k, back when Apple was the guy driving phone prices through the roof.

![]() 04/16/2020 at 21:33 |

The 4a specs are pretty much known at this point. Both are small and have headphone jacks . The SE has a better CPU and wireless charging, the 4a is not much larger but with way less bezels has way more screen, and it’s higher resolution. SE appare tly won’t have a proper night mode like the 4a’s Night Sight which is on all Pixels.
I much prefer Android over iOS so it’s no contest for me but there’s your differences.

I’m actually more curious about the Pixel 5. I haven’t been too interested in the flagship Pixels because I think they’re too pricey for what they offer, but the 5 is going to have the Snapdragon 765, which is Qualcomm’s second best chip this year. Supposedly this is being done because the SD865 includes a mandatory 5G modem that drives the price up. The theory is Google is trying to keep the price of the 5 low. Which could also explain why there’s not going to be a 4a XL. If the 5 price drops vs. the 4 there would be less room in the lineup for a 4a XL.
Generally I’m a Pixel and OnePlus guy, and I used to like Motorola back in the day but can’t bring myself to trust them and their terrible track record with updates under Lenovo ownership. OnePlus prices keep creeping up.
I think Google realized from the popularity of the 3a, there’s definitely a lot of people who want a phone that has good-enough specs, a great camera, and a reasonable price. Leaning into those attributes with the 5 , and maybe even giving it a headphone jack and fingerprint sensor , while keeping the price in line with the non-Pro OnePlus 8, or maybe even a little cheaper, would help Google sell a lot of phones. Well, as many sales as there are to be had with the world turned upside down.
![]() 04/17/2020 at 00:56 |
|
The price is what’s keeping me away from upgrading. And while the 3a would’ve been great, it didn’t have enough storage space for me.
I had a Moto G years ago. Pretty good budget phone. I miss it a bit to be honest.
Honestly, I can wait a bit yet, but the problem with tech is there’ll always be something better/faster/ cheaper in the future. Eventually you’ve got to bite the bullet.

I had an iPhone for work for a few years. Hated it. So glad I don’t have to get back to iOS.
It's all a matter of preference, I believe.

Really? I’m typing this on a phone I bought last winter, and which beats this new iPhone in every way... And is priced lower. It doesn’t have iOS obviously, which is a plus to me but a downside to others.
Ignoring the subjective advantages and disadvantages of the different OSs, there are much better phones out there for the same price.
The only reason to buy this new iPhone is because you want an iPhone. Period.

My wife has a 3a and loves it but she doesn’t have any need for a ton of storage. She had a Moto G5+ before that. She was also very happy with that phone but the smaller width, camera, screen and general speed of the 3a were all nice improvements for her.
I have an Essential, which I love, which replaced a Galaxy S7 Edge that I hated and could only keep for a year, which replaced a Moto X Pure which I loved until I decided I really should be using a screen lock, but it didn’t have a fingerprint sensor and a PIN got tedious.
If I had to buy a phone right now it'd probably be between a 3a XL or OnePlus 7T. I don't need the latest greatest and have a hard time justifying spending over $500 for a phone when perfectly good ones can still be had for that amount or less.
